Flashlight Reading

Students in Mrs. Hoyt's kindergarten classroom visited Ms. Varrell's second grade classroom today. The second graders read to kindergarten students utilizing a flashlight. The students all greatly enjoyed their partner reading time.

Owls

Mrs. Pavlicek, from the Burlington Science Center, did an amazing lesson today for the kindergarten students on owls. It was a lot of fun to learn about our school's mascot.

Professional Development

Today I greatly enjoyed going to the MassCUE conference with Ms. Merlino, Ms. Mills, and Mrs. Hayes which was held at Gillette Stadium. The focus of the conference was on ways to enhance learning and instruction through technology.

It was also wonderful to see former students of Pine Glen who are currently attending Burlington High School at the conference showcasing technological projects they created such as an augmented reality sandbox.

Two Column Note Taking

Today, during my walk through of third grade, I saw Mrs. Salvador (our reading specialist) instructing students in how to take two column notes. Two column note taking helps students grasp technical or detail information in science and social studies in particular. Through this note taking strategy students grasp main ideas and details. It also helps students to retain information in their long term memory.

I first learned about two column note taking when I was in my first year of teaching at the Landmark School in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Guided Reading Grade 4

Today during my walkthrough of classrooms I saw Mrs. Visocchi teaching a guided reading lesson to her fourth-grade students.

Pine Glen Kindergarten Students Are Grant Recipients!

The Pine Glen Kindergartners will be experiencing some different learning opportunities this
year thanks to the generosity of the Burlington Education Foundation.  Fine Motor Boot
Camp will help teachers support students in the area of fine motor, language, and social skills.  We will work on hand-eye coordination, pre-writing, pincer grip, dexterity, visual perception and more!

This project is funded by a grant from the Burlington
Education Foundation.

"The BEF's mission is to channel donations from

Flexible Seating...Sit, Kneel, Rock or Stand - Just Learn

Flexible Seating...Sit, Kneel, Rock or Stand - Just Learn!  Room 103 has made the focus of this year's class the children and lots of options!  Thanks to classroom donations, purchases and a grant from the Burlington Education Foundation, students have many options and lots of control in what tools they need to be the best students they can be.

Our classroom full of empowered learners love the freedom and choices!  Students are motivated and develop a sense of independence when they are in control.  Our daily message is, "It is your job to be the best student you can be.  Be sure to select the best tool and seating option to help you to be your best."

Visit our room and you will see students in bucket rockers, wooden slatted Howda-hug  and Backjack chairs.  We have cube chairs, wedges and bumpy cushions.

We sit in chair, on mats and on bumpy cushions when we work!

We have smaller bean bag like chairs and a bigger one!

Sometimes students even enjoy sharing a seat!

Our seating options are great for whole group time, individual work time and for times when we work with partners!

Having so many options would not be possible without the support of the community.  This project is funded by a grant from the Burlington Education Foundation.  "The BEF's mission is to channel donations from businesses and individuals to provide Burlington educators with an additional source of funding for creative and innovative curriculum enrichment programs.

Be sure to visit the Burlington Education Foundation website for further information about the organization and how community members can get involved and support the BEF.  See information about the fall raffle and annual trivia event scheduled for March, 2018.
