4th Grade Rocket Day 2015

Students Writing on Desks

Students in Mrs. Fitzpatrick's fifth grade math class today were writing on their desks. These erasable desk markers are a great way to increase the visual field when students are learning division.

Grade 1 Fall Festival

First grade had their Fall Festival today. The students loved creating different expressions of the fall season.

Phonics

Mrs. Hoyt's kindergarten class made a witch's brew this morning using the phonetic sounds of letters for the ingredients.

Bat Hats

Mrs. Parnell's kindergarten class made some fantastic bat hats. We also noticed that Mrs. Parnell, Mrs. Ardizzoni, and Mr. Lyons were all wearing orange for some reason.

Mrs. Agati and Ms. Fallon

We are all wondering were our music teacher Mrs. Agati and art teacher Ms. Fallon could be?

Hoot!

Ms. Zanotti and Mr. Lyons had an assembly yesterday with all the the different grades about being Appropriate, Safe and Kind (ASK) in school. Ms. Pavlicek, from the Burlington Science Center, joined the assembly with an owl named Scout who literally does "hoot." When staff see students displaying behaviors that are Appropriate, Safe and Kind, they will recognize these positive behaviors with a Hoot Card. The area outside the conference room, the "Owl's Nest," will display the number of Hoot cards the different grades received to recognize their positive behaviors. We are very excited to promote and recognize the many positive behaviors at Pine Glen Elementary School.

Note From the Principal

In the movie "Back to the Future Part II," the main character Marty McFly travels to October 21, 2015, to save his children, who are not yet born.  The media has recently featured several pieces comparing and contrasting what that date looked like in the movie and what we see today.  While watching a news story, I was reminded of my favorite part of the movie.  It is a line from the character Doc Brown.  Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd states, "Your future hasn't been written yet.  No one's has.  Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one."

Recently, 1,500 top CEO's were asked what is the number one quality they look for in future employees.  Overwhelming,  all the CEO's responded back that it was creativity.  A lot of the CEO's and scholars have said that there are problems today that we have never had to solve before in history and future problems will present the same or greater challenges.   What will untimely be the deciding factor will be people's level of creativity in arriving at solutions.

I constantly ask what can I do to help my two daughters and the students at Pine Glen make a good future.  In addition, to being appropriate, safe, and kind a fourth component came to me when I thought about Back to the Future 2 and that is creativity.   The other day when my daughter in second grade took apart her Lego version of Elsa's Castle I was excited.  I thought, "She isn't taking it apart, she was creating something new". I can't wait to see what she makes from it.  Let's all work together to promote creativity in our children and like Doc Brown help them make their their future a good one.

Music

Students used different instruments in music class today with Mrs. Agati. The students greatly enjoyed the instruments accompanying their singing.

Grade 5 Math

Today I had a blast listening to students in fifth grade during math. In the following pictures, Mrs. Fitzpatrick is showing the differences between and area model and the traditional algorithm when solving a math problem. In the other two pictures, Ms. Lane is having her students share how they used the distributive property to solve problems. The rich math vocabulary used by the students and their reasoning was really great to watch.
