Pajama Day 2016

Students and staff at Pine Glen wore their pajamas to school today. This was part of an all school reward for earning a large amount of "Hoot" cards. Pine Glen Elementary School's mascot is an owl.

Staff recognize students, a class, whole grade leave or even the entire student body with a "Hoot" card when observing appropriate, safe and kind (ASK) behaviors.

In the following picture you can see Mrs. Visocchi and students proudly wearing their pajamas to school.

Grade 3 Math

Today during my walk-through I saw Mrs. Cunha teaching students about patterns in multiplication and the distributive property.

Fall Sing Along

Yesterday, at the end of the day, we had our all school Fall Sing Along. It was great to have our entire school community come together and sing.

Rocket Day 2016

Ms. Pavlicek and Mr. Mussleman from the Burlington Science Center worked with the fourth grade students and teachers yesterday on Rocket Day. All the students had a "Blast." The students greatly enjoyed launching their rockets and learning about scientific concepts such as gravity, thrust and force.

Rocket Day 2016

Yesterday some students thought Gigi the penguin from ST Math was visiting the school. It turned out to be Ms. Pavlicek, director of the Burlington Science Center, in a penguin costume riding a rocket cart. She was using the cart to help demonstrate and show the scientific principals of thrust and force.

Song Birds

Yesterday morning I thought I saw song birds in the Scholar's Garden. Upon closer examination, I realized it was Mrs. Agati and Ms. Fallon.

First Grade Fall Festival

Attached are pictures form the Fall Festival in first grade yesterday. Thank you to all the volunteers for helping! The first graders had a great time.

Stage and Screen

We are very excited to have a new multi-media sound system being installed on the stage at Pine Glen Elementary School. This new system will allow us to enhance our amazing concerts put on by the students.

Below are some pictures of the original system which is over 50 years old. The original system had vacuum fuses and a turntable. The technicians installing the new system told me this was state of the art technology in the early 1960's.

Grade 1

This year we purchased new chairs for all four first grade classrooms. In the following pictures you can see students in some of the new chairs using iPads practicing phonics with a program called Lexia. The last picture shows some more of the new chairs and Ms. Mills teaching a guided reading lesson.

Read Aloud

Mrs. Horton is a retired Pine Glen Teacher. We are very fortunate to have her work part time as a RTI tutor with kindergarten. After completing her time as an RTI tutor today, she was a guest reader for a read aloud with a kindergarten class.

We have staff at Pine Glen who had Mrs. Horton as their teacher when they attended Pine Glen as students.

Grade 2 Math

Today during my walk through I saw second grade teachers all introducing the math concept of compensation to their students. Compensation involves changing one addend to a multiple of ten and adjusting the other addend to keep the balance. This math concept sets a foundation for algebra and chemistry in future years.

Mrs. Beaulieu in the following picture can be seen talking to her second graders about this concept. Seeing this lesson reminded me of how much I greatly enjoyed teaching compensation when I taught second grade.
