Miss Pavlicek and Mr. Musselman from the Burlington Science Center did a lesson today with all the students at Pine Glen Elementary School titled "Our Trash, Our Choices." Students learned critical thinking, data collection and categorization.

Anonymous Threat At Burlington High School 

Burlington High School received an anonymous Skype phone call at approximately 12:15 this afternoon threatening the school.

The Emergency Response Team was immediately gathered, which includes school personnel and the Burlington Police Department.  After evaluating the situation, and due to the fact that many other schools in Massachusetts received this type of threat last Friday, and many more today, the police assessment was that this is a low level threat and most likely a hoax. 

Students have already been dismissed because of mid-year exams and, as an added layer of precaution,  we have decided to cancel all afternoon activities and dismiss faculty and staff as well.

There will be an increased police presence in the morning and during dismissal times tomorrow and we will update everyone if the situation changes.

Boys and Girls Varsity and JV Basketball will leave from MSMS today.   Girls Basketball will leave at 2:00, Boys Gymnastics - 3:00 and Boys Basketball will leave at 4:00.

Girls Varsity Gymnastics scheduled at home vs. Wakefield will be cancelled and rescheduled to a later date.

Track practice will be cancelled for today and the Fitness Center will also be closed.

Toys and School

Recently Shopkins have become a very popular toy. I have seen them first hand in my house, relatives and friend's homes how much children enjoy playing with them. Please remind students that Shopkins are toys and need to stay at home. Also, students are not allowed to trade toys including Shopkins at school and on the bus.

Electronics and Toys

Children may not bring electronic games, ipods, or other electronic equipment to school.  If a parent believes a cell phone is warranted for safety reasons the cell phone must be turned off and left in a student’s backpack during the school day. If a child removes an electronic device or cell phone from the backpack for any reason that electronic device  or cell phone will be confiscated by administration.  The administrator will return the electronic device or cell phone to a parent and/or disciplinary action will be taken.  The school is not responsible for the loss of any electronic equipment.

Similarly, toys, collectible cards and stuffed animals are not allowed at school. However, if  these items are needed for after school activities, all non-educational items are to remain in the backpack for the school day.   

Any child who brings a potentially dangerous object to school is subject to disciplinary action.  Toy knives, toy guns or any other sharp or dangerous objects are not allowed at school at any time for any reason.  Any child who brings such items will have these items collected by staff and parents will be contacted by the principal   Students are not allowed to sell or trade toys.  

Community Outreach

The student council presented a check to a representative from the Burlington Food Pantry.   Money for the donation came from the Walkathon hosted by the PTO on November 25, 2015.    It is wonderful when Pine Glen Elementary School can provide community outreach and help others in need.

Valentine Fundraiser

The Basic Rights workshop provides families with an introduction to their rights in regards to their child’s education.

This workshop is designed to help parents learn to be effective partners with their child’s school to decide their

child’s eligibility for special education, and to plan, make decisions and monitor their child’s progress in school.

Innovation/Exploratory/Creativity Day: December 23, 2015

Today students at Pine Glen Elementary School participated in an Innovation/Exploratory/Creativity Day.   Students engaged in learning activities that required their higher order thinking and collaborative problem solving skills.  Some students worked with students across different grade levels.  All the students had a lot of fun learning.
