Community Outreach

Students at Pine Glen brought in food this morning that was presented to the Burlington Food Pantry later in the day.

Turkey Trot & Walk-a-Thon 2016

Thank you very much to our physical education teachers Ms. Govoni, Mr. Kip, and the PTO for organizing and running a great Turkey Trot and Walk-a-Thon.

Chemical and Physical Reactions

This morning Mr. Mussleman from the Burlington Science Center and Mr. Papadonis, retired director of the center, participated in an all school assembly. They helped students understand the difference between a physical and chemical reaction. The presentation went off with a "bang" as a pumpkin exploded showing students a chemical reaction.

Dr. Conti

This morning fourth graders learned that their substitute teacher was Dr. Conti. The students greatly enjoyed having Dr. Conti as their fourth grade teacher today.

Morning Message and Responsive Classroom

This morning during my walk through I saw Morning Meeting and Responsive Classroom taking place in Mrs. Hoyt's kindergarten classroom, Mrs. Bourgeois's first grade classroom and Ms. Jackson's first grade classroom too.

The Morning Meeting is a great tool to prepare students to learn, work on social-emotional learning, and build a culture of respect.

Responsive Classroom is an approach that shows the link between social-emotional learning and academics. It also creates a community and enhances a culture of kindness.

Both Morning Meeting and Responsive Classroom are great practices that strengthen our message of being appropriate, safe and kind (ASK). We recognize ASK behaviors at Pine Glen with "Hoot" cards. The reason we call them "Hoot" cards is because our mascot is an owl.

Cross-Curriculum

During my walk through today I saw Ms. Fallon, art teacher, and Mrs. Sheppard, first grade teacher, co-teaching a lesson on sentence structure and the relationship to illustrations found in books. Students were creating a sentence with matching illustration to show comprehension of the book they had previously read and their knowledge of story elements.

Pine Glen Birthday Book Club

This blog was originally posted on BPSEdTech.org.

Below are the newest members of the Pine Glen Birthday Book Club. Members were invited to the library to select a book from the new acquisitions. A special bookplate with their name and the name(s) of the donor were placed inside the front cover. Photos with the birthday book are on the Birthday Book Club Wall outside the learning commons (library). Ms. Small appreciates the donations. Pine Glen Elementary School students will love these new books. Applications will be accepted again in the spring.

(A huge thanks to Mrs. Naddaff for orchestrating this!)
