Grade 1

This year we purchased new chairs for all four first grade classrooms. In the following pictures you can see students in some of the new chairs using iPads practicing phonics with a program called Lexia. The last picture shows some more of the new chairs and Ms. Mills teaching a guided reading lesson.

Read Aloud

Mrs. Horton is a retired Pine Glen Teacher. We are very fortunate to have her work part time as a RTI tutor with kindergarten. After completing her time as an RTI tutor today, she was a guest reader for a read aloud with a kindergarten class.

We have staff at Pine Glen who had Mrs. Horton as their teacher when they attended Pine Glen as students.

Grade 2 Math

Today during my walk through I saw second grade teachers all introducing the math concept of compensation to their students. Compensation involves changing one addend to a multiple of ten and adjusting the other addend to keep the balance. This math concept sets a foundation for algebra and chemistry in future years.

Mrs. Beaulieu in the following picture can be seen talking to her second graders about this concept. Seeing this lesson reminded me of how much I greatly enjoyed teaching compensation when I taught second grade.

Letter to Parents Washing Hands

Dear Parents,

In the past two weeks we have had students with the stomach virus, strep throat, and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.  Mrs. Ferrick, our school nurse, and I are writing to request your assistance in reminding everyone the importance of careful handwashing.   The Center for Disease Control recommends that hands are lathered for 20 seconds and rinsed with warm water. Some students like to sing “Happy Birthday” while they wash to make sure they have spent enough time.  Also, with winter weather not too far away, please encourage students not to share hats.   If you have any questions or concerns please call or email Mrs. Ferrick (ferrick@bpsk12.org).

With Warmest Regards,

John Lyons, M.S. Ed.
Principal

Safety Practice and Drills

This morning at Pine Glen Elementary School we had the Burlington Police come and review bus safety with the students. We then had the Burlington Fire Department come and do a fire drill.

All of the students did a fantastic job practicing the safety drills and were Appropriate, Safe, and Kind (ASK). All the students earned a "Hoot Card."
